TINA Debriefing...
It has taken me a little while to write about this years This Is Not Art, because the dreaded Home Computer has been giving me bother and the dreaded Work has been keeping me from accessing others. First, the Post No Bills launch was a RAVING success, which was pleasing, as I had fully convinced myself that no one would show up and that Anwyn and I would be forced to eat all of the radioactive cupcakes ourselves. A frightening prospect, let me assure you. But not only did people come, they even ate the cupcakes without any persuading at all! It occurs to me that I should probably explain what Post No Bills is, and why all this talk of cupcakes. Well... Post No Bills is essentially a mailing list. It was created by inviting people we knew to invite people they knew to invite people THEY knew etc to contact us with their postal address. We then compiled all of these addresses into a list, photocopied it then sent it back out to everyone on the list. Hence, these people now had access to many other people who are interested in writing letters, sending mail art, collaborating on projects or just receiving weird things in the post. Papercut Collective (ie. Anwyn and I, at present. To those who say that a 'collective' must constitute more than two people, I say: a collective is a state of mind. And also: shut up) received a small grant from the Literature Board of the Australia Council to create some sort of publication with a selection of the material that people had been sending each other. The result of which was the Fun Pack! An unbelievably tedious, time consuming, labour intensive project in itself - but very lovely, if I may say. It consists of 18 individually assembled/copied reproductions of letters, pictures, postcards etc that were sent by folks on the mailing list. The Fun Pack was launched at TINA, where we also signed up a lot more people to participate in Post No Bills. The mailing list, which contained about 30 addresses originally, now looks likley to have upwards of 60. Though I quail at the thought of the extra work involved in compiling the new list, I am sure that only more postal goodness can come on it. The launch was also notable for the glorious, ADHD inducing cupcakes that Anwyn and I baked specially for it. Now, If only I were slightly more of a computer whiz kid I could post photographs so that you could all marvel at them. Just be happy knowing that they involved vast quantities of colourful frosting, fruit tingles, licorice, lolly dinosaurs, jelly beans and hundreds and thousands in a number of spectacular (and stomach turning) patterns and designs. Thanks to everyone who ate them. Incidentally, if you would like to join Post No Bills, you can do so by writing to PO BOX 4, Enmore, NSW 2042. Remember that this is a POSTAL project - NO EMAIL ALLOWED! Now, moving on to TINA, and the zine fair, and Flying Machine: As predicted, it was hot and sunny. I am want to complaining about these weather phenomenon, and often do, but I will spare you now and instead focus on positive aspects of the day, which included drinking lemonade, swapping zines and buying them too, talking to nice people, meeting folks off the Post No Bills list and almost completely exhausting all Flying Machine stock. Which means that Flying Machine will be on a bit of a slow down while I rephotocopy some stuff and get in contact with folks whose zines I sold. That will happen over the next few weeks, though if you picked up a catalogue from TINA you can probably still get most of what is listed there, but it might be a good idea to email me (fake_space_program(A)graffiti.net) and check first. Thank you to everyone who took a catalogue and ordered after TINA, too! That's about all I have the energy to write at the moment. Join Post No Bills. It's fun! Make a zine. It's fun, too! Trousers off! xxem | | Wednesday, September 27th, 2006 | | 10:20 pm |
TINA 2006
How quickly the time passes etc etc... The magnificent Flying Machine is busy making preparations for this years THIS IS NOT ART festival in Newcastle. The most exciting news is that Anwyn and I have finally completed the inaugral Post No Bills Fun Pack! We're having a launch party as part of TINA on the 23rd of September at Staple Manor (376 King St, Newcastle) from 3 - 4:30pm. There will be TEA! And CAKE! And PASS THE POSTAL PARCEL! You would be very foolish not to attend. And of course on Sunday we will be having a stall at the zine fair, hocking our many delightful wares, keeling over from sun exposure, meeting people, not meeting people. What joy! I do hope to see you there. e x | | Sunday, July 23rd, 2006 | | 11:13 am |
Correction and update
For those who don't fastidiously read the comments attached to these entries, that's 3CR NOT 3RRR in Melbourne. PLEASE don't try tuning your radio to 3RRR. It might not be good. Or even possible, for that matter. Thank you, A, for spotting my error. It just goes to show my supreme ignorance where Melbournian radio stations are concerned. Though it is pretty funny, since they INTERVIEWED me. Ahem. It's a glorious day today here in Tempe, but I have promised myself to spend the bulk of it at my desk completing the new Penny Sentinel zine (when I say 'completing' you should read: 'beginning'). It will be, if things go according to plan, a single A3 sheet with the next installment of 'the black dog' comic on one side and the usual grammatically poor typewritten ranting on the reverse. While I'm doing this I also hope to begin putting together an update for the catalogue. It will include the new zines that folks have sent to me over the past few months, including 'OH', a lovely zine by R, whom I actually met, in a (not so?) bizarre coincidence at an action at UTS the other day. West Side Angst numbers 9 and 11 the Das Papierkrieg comic, all from Ianto How Our World Was Made, by me + Tim Elephant Mess 16 and numbers 5 and 6 of the juniper from Dan. And I have some copies of the Mutiny zine (issue 3) and will hopefully get some of #4. | | Saturday, July 15th, 2006 | | 11:19 am |
rubber stamps and radio interviews
On Thursday I was interviewed on the diy arts show in Melbourne about Flying Machine - how exciting! Despite finding the experience akin to waking up on the morning of a school exam (ie. frankly, quite frightening) I am very grateful to Lou and Craig and Nicole for inviting me to step out of work for a few minutes to talk to them. I believe that their program airs every Thursday from 5:00 on 3RRR, so if you live in Melbourne you should listen and maybe call them up and tell them how nice they are. Also you should look up www.breakdownpress.org, of which Lou is one half, and which you can do whether you live in Melbourne or not. In other mildly interesting Flying Machine related news, I am now the proud owner of not one but TWO excellent rubber stamps bearing the Flying Machine name and address and nice pictures of - you guessed it - flying machines! So you should most certainly write to me so that I can use them to stamp your envelope. And if you ever find yourself in the area you can visit the Federal Rubber Stamps factory at 2 Sydenham rd Marrickville, as we've found them most willing to accommodate our strange stamp design requests and they have an impressive selection of pre-digital age stationery. And they have a nice old cash register. And they hand write all their receipts. And while I get all sentimental over the pleasant technological time warp that the Federal Rubber Stamps factory occupies I should add that we just bought a computer, which is already promising to make my life more complicated in most regards other than that I will be able to update this journal at my leisure and begin typing up an update for the Flying Machine catalogue. Thank you to everyone who has ordered, asked for a catalogue or sent me their zine in the past few months. emma x | | Friday, April 21st, 2006 | | 9:38 am |
CATALOGUE AVAILABLE NOW
Yes, you read that correctly. The inaugral Flying Machine catalogue is finally complete and only available in print form by emailing your address to: fake_space_program@graffiti.net or by writing to: PO Box 4, Enmore NSW, 2042, Australia The catalogue contains mostly zines made by folks in Sydney and Melbourne, including, in alphabetical order: Aftermaths, Arson, Disobedient, Found in the Ruins, I am a Camera, Out of Our Lives, Penny Sentinel, Rocketdog, Scrapbook to Somewhere and many more. You would be very foolish indeed not to obtain a copy of the catalogue, which, I might add, is free. | | Wednesday, January 18th, 2006 | | 2:26 pm |
Oh, the blinding frustration...
Just a short entry to let anyone who is interested to know that the reason the promised catalogue is still not available is due to computer problems, ie the computer that I just finished - finally! - typing up every morsel of information for the catalogue (ordering info, zine descriptions etc) died before I managed to get anything printed. Stupidly, I didn't have the file backed up on a disc, so I'm gonna have to start from scratch, basically. It won't take me so long this time, because I had pretty much memorised word for word the entire catalogue from endless proof reading, so hopefully it'll be together by the end of the month. What it does hopefully mean is that a couple of people who had zines that I thought wouldn't make it on time to be included in the first print run might actually get in. | | Wednesday, November 30th, 2005 | | 1:47 pm |
Catalogue Available 1st January 2006
And that's the definate, final deadline I have given myself. Aside from the zines that I have there will be lists of resources, reviews and short articles that will hopefully give it a more zine-like than catalogue-like feel. The emphasis will be on local (ie first Sydney, then New South Wales, then the east coast, then Australia, then the Asia-Pacific and so forth) diy type efforts, so if anyone knows of a shop that stocks zines, a space that's good for gigs, a fence that can be jumped, do send in your suggestions for what to include. It's a pretty short deadline, and to be honest the first issue will be pretty short itself, but I hope to make this a regular (quarterly) publication, so keep things in mind for the future, too. See ya | | Wednesday, October 12th, 2005 | | 3:25 pm |
Greetings all, first a quick rundown on what happened at TINA - We didn't end up taking Polly, which is good, because I think she would have got very grumpy on the train to Newcastle. I know I did. I got up there in time to set up the stall next to Mr Leigh Rigozzi (who draws very good comics) beneath the blazing hot sun. It was windy, but the organisers had thoughtfully provided rocks to keep the many pieces of folded paper in place on their respective tables. As the wind picked up it quickly began to seem as if everyone was selling rocks. When Anwyn came along she thoughtfully suggested that we move a table to the shade so as not to die of heat stroke. So we did. I would like to thank everyone who bought zines off us and took fliers and gave us their zines and talked to us and was friendly and gave us sun screen. We sold many zines and gave many away and went home feeling very exhausted and talked about how scary the world is these days. The experience of holding a stall was pretty wearying and has made me reconsider how I'm gonna be running this show. Originally I had planned on getting together a full online catalogue and of holding semi- regular stalls at Glebe markets and at events like TINA. But I'm thinking now that I would like to keep things small scale and more apt to fitting in with the million other projects I usually have going. I want to do this to the point where it is enjoyable, not where it begins to feel like a job. I'm not concerned with budgets and balancing and business like things in general, so keeping it confined to a print catalogue and livejournal is actually looking like a more viable option for me. That said I would still love people to send me their zines and I am in the process of getting that catalogue together - The idea is that it will be integrated into the next zine that I do, so it won't just be a list of zines but other things worth seeing in their own right. So, keep posted for news of the catalogue. Thanks to all the new zinesters who have sent me their stuff. | | Wednesday, September 14th, 2005 | | 3:52 pm |
This Is Not Art...
Hello. Apologies to anybody who has actually missed my online presence of late. I got that quick entry in just to let you know that I'm still alive, but now for some details. The first public outing of The Magnificent Flying Machine will occur on the 2nd of October where I shall take my banana box full of zines to the This Is Not Art zine fair where I have just booked a table. I don't have as much stuff together as I would have liked because the past two months have just been crazy with moving house and a bunch of other shit and then I got a BOYFRIEND and you know how time-consuming that is. Hopefully he'll realise his folly soon and I'll be able to get on with my life without involuntarily diverting half of my attention to how nice it all is...Yeah. So, if you're going to TINA come along and get much PO Box 4/Flying Machine/Post No Bills related propaganda. Anwyn and I have been contemplating taking honorable zine macot Polly Le Tigre (the most name dropped cat in Australian zine land) up to Newcastle with us. And if you need a space to hock your goods but can't be bothered getting a table booked (although I heard something about them now being free or something? Which is puzzling?) I'm sure you could muscle in on a corner of ours cuz we probably won't even have enough stuff to cover it. I meant to make a full list of what I'm actually taking up with me, but stupidly left my stock book at home. So, off the top of my head: Aftermaths Civilian (stickers by Tom Civil) Arson A Day Mournful and Overcast The Village Bike #4 Check Yr Pulse Penny Sentinel Westside Angst #9+10 (a couplea copies, anyway) disobedient Das Papierkrieg #10 Scrapbook to Somewhere This Wicked Tongue There's more than that but at the moment I just can't remember everything. There are also all of the things that the Beating Hearts kids sent me, which I'll be selling for very cheap to help me pay for my train fare and stuff. I'll update this list tomorrow. Of course, I'm still looking for new things to actually get this distro happening. So send me yr stuff. And apologies to everyone I have taken so long to reply to lately. I'll be working at full speed again soon. Be well everyone. Pray for more government resignations, love Emmaxox | | Friday, September 2nd, 2005 | | 4:15 pm |
It's Alive!
And busy! And in a new house! And still unemployed! And still working on the distro! And still wants zines! And is going to This Is Not Art in Newcastle definately on Sunday the 2nd of October for the zine fair and maybe on Friday the 30th for a panel on letter writing! And will be moving to a Blogspot soon! And will attempt to avoid month long periods of silence from now on! | | Sunday, July 31st, 2005 | | 12:27 pm |
Catalogue, TINA, zine submissions, websight, humpback whales...
I just did the craziest bare foot bike sprint to the beach after Mum called to tell me that they had just spotted TEN humpback whales off north Maroubra, but, of course, by the time I got there they were already well on their way to Coogee. I saw three sprays of foam mid-distance, that's all. Dammit. Still. It was a fun ride. Just posting to inform everyone who's interested that the distro is still progressing, and I have about 20 items in stock, which I'd say is just enough to put an interim catalogue together, so that will be happening soon. I know I said that I would try to have something together by the end of July, but it probably wont be until another 2 weeks. You may have noticed elsewhere there is a message from Susy who is organising this years ziney part of TINA. Hopefully I will have a table at TINA. I'll find out what the program address is and post it later so's you can all understand what it's all about. Also, the existence of Blogspot has recently come to my attention, and I will probably be shifting all Flying Machine related news and updates to one such sight as soon as I have time to open an account. It's still not a proper website, but enables the use of a little more detail and the addition of links and what not otherwise lacking in this livejournal. Sorry, was just kicked off the computer. I was going to say, of course, that I' am still seeking submissions from zinesters. I actually got a whole stack of stuff yesterday, so I definately have enough to put a list together. Adios... | | Tuesday, July 12th, 2005 | | 1:17 pm |
At the Library
I hear that Bad Brains recorded an alternate-version of 'At the Movies' under this title. I know that I promised to put a list of what is on the Flying Machine roster here, but I have decided that it would be better if I wait until I have a paper catalogue together. This is not really an appropriate place to put really long descriptions of zines and mail charts etc. HOWEVER, if you send me a copy of your zine and I decide to stock it, I can send you a list of what is currently available, if you would like distro trade/credit in return. That said, I received a loverly zine and letter from the UK yesterday. Thanks Chez. I hope to hear from you soon. Slowly, slowly, things take form... And please feel free to contribute to the increasingly ridiculous discussion on the possible links between the Spanish Civil war and music from Montreal occuring elsewhere in this livejournal. | | Thursday, July 7th, 2005 | | 12:12 pm |
Excellent News
Well, firstly, thanks to all of the loverly folks who have added Flying Machine to their links pages. If I knew how to, I'd do the same for you! Maybe when I have a proper web site of my own. Secondly, the exciting news. It comes in two parts, being: a) that last night I wrote up descriptions for all of the zines I have thus far - about 10 from Beating Hearts (which are all going for postage only) and 6 new zines sourced from other place. I will soon have an introductory catalogue together, with lots of freebees and things to help get this project going. and b) that much awaited zine from my dear friend A arraived today, and it's just breathtakingly good. Heartbreaking and sad and beautiful. It is called 'aftermaths'. At every new word A writes I wonder how the world ever existed without them. Well, I suppose the world isn't much without our stories to define it somehow. Thank you Lici for being the first to post, and thanks to A for the parcel. xox Emma | | Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 | | 12:33 pm |
Friend!
I have a friend! A friend who likes Little Britain and Calvin and Hobbes, no less! Maybe my new friend would like to explain to me how this here livejournal stuff actually works? How do I get new friends? Do I have to ask someone to be my friend? Oh dear. If I happen to commit any internet faux pas, please be assured that it's due to my computer illiteracy rather than malicious intent. Anyway, since I'm posting I may as well reiterate the 'send me your zines I need you zines I want to get this thing started' line. I sent a couple more requests to zinesters today. I eagerly anticipate the completion of A's new zine, which she has been promising for too long. For those of you already familiar with the PO Box 4 kids, A has in the past been responsible for Television is Evil, Drift, and Secret Archives of the Recent Past, among many others, I'm sure. On that note, I may as well mention that I, too, recently finished a zine which has apparently been selling like something that sells very well at the Sticky zine shop in Melbourne. The zine's called Penny Sentinel and is available from me at PO BOX 4, Enmore NSW, 2042 Australia, for a couple of dollars or preferably a trade of some description - zine, patch, recipe, letter etc. Okay. Didn't G8 look jolly? | | Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 | | 1:13 pm |
Further Thing Fixing
SIGH. Will I never get used to this computery stuff. For those of you who have attempted to post replies to my entries and found that you can't, I have now fixed it so that you CAN. You don't have to be a registered livejournal junkie. Huzzah! I recieved some more zines yesterday, which I'll write up by next week, I hope. Spent last night drinking gin and mint homemade mixes and listening to the Modern Lovers and plotting some crazy interventionist theatre with some girls I've never met before. I will never get over being hugged by strangers. Slept through my alarm clock and was late to this job network appointment (where I do most of my typing). I feel pretty seedy, but happy. I'm gonna go straight home and keep writing descriptions for the flying machine catalogue. Only 83 days til TINA (This Is Not Art). I've never even been before, but a friend dobbed in my address to talk about distros. Huh! What would I know? xox | | Wednesday, June 29th, 2005 | | 6:02 pm |
Comments and Questions...
Hello. Thank you to everyone who has responded to my letters, emails and other call outs concerning Flying Machine. At the rate things are going I hope to have a print catalogue of zines happening by the end of July. And that list of stuff form Beating Hearts is coming - I'm just waiting on a few more things to arrive. Thank you to whoever it was who by pointing out to me that you couldn't post comments on this site forced me to delve deeper into the livejournal functioning and check the 'enable messages' box. My computer illiteracy has been alleviated just...so. Please feel free to post comments and ask questions about the distro and me and how everything's going. And announce your zine, distro, plans to storm the citadel etc. I hope when you come the weather will be clement. (Love to G. who's gonna throw a rock for me at G8...) | | Monday, June 27th, 2005 | | 11:41 am |
Stock just arraived!
Well, among the torrent of letters that flooded from poor wee PO Box 4 on Friday was a parcel collection slip informing me of the arrival of the Beating Hearts Zine Distro Rescue Package (as it will now be known as). I will make a complete list of the zines and pamphlets contained in that package later on. They include back issues of That Girl, Woozy, Ventricle, Ten Foot Rule etc I feel strange having these lost and orphaned zines sitting in an old banana box on my dresser. I didn't pay anything for them, and most of them are very old, and have been passed on from distro to distro, and their creators would have no idea that they are in my care, or who the hell I am. For all these reasons I have decided that I will be giving a whole bunch of them away, and selling the rest for considerably less than they would normally be. Any money I make will, of course, be put back into the distro to order new zines. Additionally, the Beating Hearts kids have sent me the latest issues of Check Yr Pulse, Arson and The Village Bike, which I will be stocking. Keep posted for the complete list of zines and prices. I hope to have a print catalogue out in a month or so. AGAIN - I am still seeking out zines to stock. Send your creation to PO BOX 4, ENMORE NSW 2042, AUSTRALIA | | Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 | | 5:05 pm |
Making Progress...
It's been less than a week since I began the shout out for zine submissions to Flying Machine, and already the response has been fairly overwhelming. I would like to thank everyone who has offered their support so far and everyone who has promised to help spread the word... I'd especially like to send love and thanks to the kids at Beating Hearts Collective who have generously offered to donate material to help me get this project started. Beating Hearts run a not-for-profit distro/mail order service and DIY publishing collective who stock a whole heap of anarchist and activist literature, zines and music. Check out their web site: www.beatingheartspress.com Thank you guys so-so much! Well, it's been a good start, but I still need more submissions if I'm gonna get a catalogue together. Send samples to: PO Box 4, Enmore NSW, 2042 Australia LOVE EMMAxxx |
